3 to 4 Week Teen Leadership Program

Summer Counselor-In-Training Program

About the program:

Built to empower, educate and provide leadership opportunities for our teens – we proudly introduce Biocitzen’s Summer CIT Program.

What is a CIT?  Traditionally CIT is an acronym for a Counselor-in-Training.

Weeks 1 & 2: Teen Leadership Training Week

All of our CIT’s will walk and train together with our Program Director Benny Jacobs-Schwartz, and other special guest lecturers!  This immersive experience will provide one week of educating and training, and one week of implementing and practicing our skills.
1 week of education (covering topics found below)
1 week of peer-based practice (training wheels are still on!)
1-2 weeks of implementation in the field (working with groups of Biocitzens)
Week 1 – Learn the ropes: As a group, we will learn, explore and discuss many of the important aspects of outdoor leadership, community building, environmental justice, local flora and fauna and much more!
Topics will include:
  • Facilitation 101
  • Basic First Aid
  • Trail leading and Navigation
  • Team Builders
  • Ice Breakers
  • Nature Games
  • Local Ecology
  • Field Journaling
  • Indigenous History
  • Diversity in the outdoors

Week 2Practice makes perfect:

After a week of learning the skills, we will now have a chance to plan, lead and facilitate our own programming. Presenting for our group of peers will afford us the opportunity to hear feedback, and observe a variety of leadership styles and techniques!

By the end of the second week, our CIT’s will be ready to put their skills to the test as they are paired up with actual groups of younger biocitizens!

Week 3/4: Put Your Skills to the Test – Field Practicum

Two CIT’s will be assigned to an “Our Place” group of younger students for these weeks. They will serve to support our Lead and Assistant Teacher, where they will have the opportunity to employ the skills they learned during their previous two weeks. We will check in via Zoom at the end of each week to hear about the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from their field practicum!
Program Culmination Celebration: CIT Saturday or Sunday Day Hike

If you are a RETURNING biocitizen (have attended programs in the past)

  1. Personal invitation to apply
  2. Apply upon your accord to join our CIT Program

If you are a RETURNING CIT (have completed CIT training in the past)

  1. Returning CITs may be eligible skip this year’s training weeks and begin field practicum in any OP Summer Sessions. Reach out to benny@biocitizen.org to confirm eligibility.

Q. How old do you have to be?

A. 12+

Age is not necessarily a determining factor for readiness to join our CIT Program! Some 12-year-olds could have been CIT’s years ago, while other 14-year-olds aren’t yet ready to a role model or support our program goals in the field!

To join the ranks of CIT’s a student will either have demonstrated role model behavior on previous biocitizen programming, or apply to be a young person has to have reached the place in their life where they are ready to be helpful! Charged with the task of supporting our younger biocitizens, we are looking for teens who are fired up about our local ecology, hiking, team building, and community leadership!

With a proven ability and interest in our educational principles, we provide an opportunity for our teens to train under our Program Director and level up their skills! From facilitation to nature games, to first-aid, we’ll empower our CIT’s to make a difference in our biocitizen community and beyond!

Open to students 12+, we invite kids to safely step into awesome leadership opportunities.

Whether it’s your fourth year as a biocitzen, or you just found out about us – if your teen is eager to learn more, connect with other awesome teens, and make a positive impact on their community, we’d love to have you apply for our CIT Summer Program!
