Sophie Lemkin

Sophie (she/hers) grew up hiking in the Santa Monica mountains and swimming in the Pacific Ocean. Sophie then traveled to Maine where she graduated from Bowdoin College with a degree in Gender and Sexuality Studies. Now, Sophie has moved back home to Los Angeles and is excited to deepen her roots in the city that raised her.

During her summers, she worked at an ocean conservation summer camp on Catalina Island. Here, Sophie got the chance to connect with kids from all over the world and share her love of the ocean with them. Thoroughly inspired by the outdoor world, she gravitated towards jobs that allowed her to continue connecting to nature, from biodynamic farming to native plant landscaping. Her favorite place to be is surrounded by plants, especially when they’re flowering! Sophie’s latest fascination has been foraging, and finding out which plants surround her also offer tasty trail treats.

She has spent the last couple of years as a professional gardener and through gardening, she has been able to connect deeper to the natural world and learn her own place in it. She believes that plant life has a great deal to teach us about how to live our own life, and by working with the environment we have the potential to work towards healing ourselves, and our relationship to the natural world. Sophie is excited to share her passion for environmental stewardship with the students of BioCitizen!

Sophie believes that the best part of being a human is the ability to keep growing and learning. She is constantly curious and lets her curiosity take her to what inspires her. When Sophie is not sticking her nose in a flower, she can be found dancing, playing basketball, writing, biking, walking, spending time at the beach, painting or making herbal tea blends.
